:: Gearbox - Differential Dynamometer


The Auto Research Center gearbox test rig dynamometer allows steady state testing to be done on any gearbox. The gearbox is tested independently from the vehicle by simulating the engine and wheels using hydraulic motors. The basis of the system is to measure input torque vs. output torque, but the system is capable of much more than that.

System Specifications:

  • Input to Gearbox

    • • 15, 000 rpm at 950 horsepower or
    • 600 ft-lbs (800 Nm) of torque

  • Output from Gearbox


    • • 250 MPH simulated wheel speed or
    • 1200 ft-lbs of torque

  • Accuracy of each unit


    • • 2 rpm
    • 0.25 hp


Modifiable System Variables:
  • Shaft speeds & horsepower to gearbox via different test rig gear ratios
  • Wheel speed via different test rig gear ratios
  • Gearbox oil temperature with temperature control
  • Gearbox oil level caused by g-forces by inclining the entire dynamometer assembly
  • Ability to change angle of propshaft using a swivel support system

Service Agreement:

There are several options available for the ARC gearbox-differential dynamometer service agreement. These can be tailored to suit the customers’ specific requirements. The options available are as follows:

1. None, this option allows the customer to be fully responsible for the rig maintenance, repair and replacement parts. Price of rig includes initial software version.

2. Software +, includes software support and upgrades throughout the year and one maintenance visit. The visit is free of charge to the customer, parts are not included. Call for annual price.

3. Full parts and Labor, includes labor and parts replacement plus all software upgrades and support. Call for pricing structure.
